Generating non-potable water from urban wastewater

The Oldenburg and East Friesan water board (Oldenburgischer-Ostfriesischer Wasserverband; OOWV) has commissioned EnviroChemie to treat clarified urban wastewater for recirculation as non-potable water for domestic and industrial purposes.

The new plant at the Nordenham site will generate 1.1 million cubic metres of non-potable water every year from wastewater treated by the municipal wastewater treatment plant, delivering fit-for-purpose non-potable water with quality levels to match industry needs exactly. Using urban wastewater as an alternative water resource to replace the use of drinking water, the new plant will enable connected industrial consumers to cut their consumption of drinking water by 1.1 million litres.

EnviroChemie’s modular plant uses a multi-barrier approach to treat the cleaned wastewater from the wastewater treatment plant with Envopur® ultra-filtration and Envopur® reverse osmosis technology, thus delivering better quality non-potable water. The plant comprises eight 40-foot technology modules, a delivery point for chemicals, and auxiliary buildings for offices, communal areas and electrical engineering equipment. The non-potable water produced is free from particles and pathogens, softened and largely desalinated. EnviroChemie provides the treatment plant as a turnkey development.

The non-potable water will supply major industrial consumers of water at the Nordenham industrial site. Once all approvals and permits have been issued for the plant, construction will start in the summer of 2024. Commissioning is planned for the end of 2025.
