Generating non-potable water from wastewater

EnviroChemie provides the technology for recovering water from urban wastewater for OOWV in Nordenham, Germany.

The Oldenburg and East Friesian water board (Oldenburgischer-Ostfriesischer Wasserverband; OOWV) is implementing a pioneering project at its Nordenham wastewater treatment plant to generate non-potable water from wastewater for industrial purposes. From summer 2026, purified wastewater from the municipal wastewater treatment plant will be supplied to the chemical company Kronos Titan via a 5.5 km long non-potable water pipeline.

A combined solution by EnviroChemie, comprising Envopur® ultrafiltration and Envopur reverse osmosis technology, will treat the processed wastewater to make it suitable for use as non-potable water. Kronos Titan will then use this non-potable water for various applications, including filtration and steam generation.

The facility is set to provide 1.1 million cubic metres of non-potable water annually and forms a crucial component of Kronos Titan’s sustainability strategy. Moreover, using the non-potable water will alleviate capacity pressures on the OOWV water treatment plant in Großenkneten, Germany.

“We are proud to be making a key contribution to this pioneering sustainability project. It is further proof of how cutting-edge technologies empower us to use resources responsibly and make a positive contribution towards protecting the environment,” concludes Klaus Dickhoff, Head of Sales at EnviroChemie.

Construction is scheduled to begin in autumn 2024.
